Fixed/Movable Placeholder
When primary teeth are lost prematurely, a space maintainer is used to ensure that the permanent tooth can erupt in the correct position. Fixed space maintainers are bonded to the tooth and remain in place, while removable ones can be taken out and put in by the child. These appliances prevent neighboring teeth from shifting into the empty space and help avoid future orthodontic problems.
